July 24, 2025

The 2023/2024 academic year has marked another vibrant chapter in the internationalization of the University of Salerno (UNISA). With hundreds of students coming in and going abroad through exchange programs, this year’s mobility figures shed light on evolving trends in academic interests, destinations, and gender distribution. Let’s take a closer look at the data.

Incoming Students: A Strong Presence from Spain and Germany

In total, 475 incoming students joined UNISA this year. The majority came from Spain (279 students), followed by Germany (43) and Poland (29). This confirms the longstanding academic collaboration between UNISA and Spanish institutions.

  • Female students represented a slight majority (187 vs. 148 males), showing a balanced gender distribution overall.
  • Most incoming students were enrolled in Bachelor programs (401), with Master (70) and PhD (4) students representing a smaller fraction.

The most popular fields of study among incoming students included:

  • Business and Administration – 52 students
  • Law – 43 students
  • Political Sciences and Civics – 23 students
  • ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) – 21 students

There was also notable interest in Pharmacy, Sociology, Medicine, and Languages.

Outgoing Students: A Diverse Set of Destinations

UNISA also sent 324 students abroad, with Spain (179) again leading as the top destination, followed by Germany (43) and France (37). Interestingly, Portugal saw a moderate rise in popularity with 13 outgoing students.

  • Here too, Master’s students (166) slightly outnumbered Bachelor’s (155), suggesting that graduate students are more likely to pursue study abroad experiences. The gender distribution mirrored the incoming group, with a slightly higher number of female participants.

Most Popular Study Programs Abroad

UNISA students who went abroad studied a wide array of subjects. Standouts include:

  • Computer Science and Engineering – 38 students

  • Business Management – 25 students

  • Medicine and Surgery – 25 students

  • Foreign Languages and Cultures – 42 students

  • Communication Sciences and Primary Teacher Education – 13 students each

Interestingly, Foreign Languages and Cultures was the single most popular area, with 42 students, highlighting a trend towards linguistic and intercultural competence.

The 2023/2024 mobility data reveals a healthy and dynamic exchange ecosystem at UNISA. The strong bilateral ties with countries like Spain and Germany, coupled with a balanced gender and program distribution, indicate the university’s robust international profile.

As UNISA continues to expand its global partnerships, the mobility trends also highlight changing student priorities—particularly the growing interest in interdisciplinary, language-focused, and technology-oriented fields.
