Mapping Higher Education in NEOLAiA: Universities, Study Programs, and Student Demographics

The NEOLAiA Alliance brings together several universities across Europe, fostering collaboration and academic excellence. This article provides an overview of the degree programs offered by NEOLAiA institutions, their geographic distribution and key student demographics.

With seven faculties, two University Institutes of Technology (IUT), an internal Polytechnic Engineering Institute (EPU), a Business Administration Institute (IAE) and a Center for Advanced Renaissance Studies, the university of Tours offers students the benefits of a multidisciplinary education.

Geographical Distribution and Study Programs

NEOLAiA consists of nine universities located in different regions of Europe, each offering a wide range of study programs. The number of programs varies from institution to institution, reflecting their academic specialization and the needs of their local communities:

    • University of Salerno (UNISA) offers a total of 118 programs, including 52 Master’s, 44 Bachelor’s, 20 PhD programs, and 2 Second-level academic specialisation diplomas. With a large student population of 34,154 (55% female), UNISA is a leader in terms of student enrollment and program offerings.
    • Örebro University (ORU) offers 106 programs, consisting of 36 Bachelor’s, 35 Master’s and 35 PhD programs. With 10,637 students (64% female), the university is known for its balanced academic offerings and emphasis on research.
    • University of Jaén (UJA) offers 127 programs, including 51 Bachelor’s, 55 Master’s and 21 PhD programs. The university has 14,863 students, with 57% female students, reflecting its strong commitment to both undergraduate and postgraduate education.
    • Ștefan cel Mare University of Suceava (USV) provides 108 programs, including 53 Bachelor’s, 41 Master’s and 14 PhD programs. USV has 9,773 students. 61% of the students are female, indicating a solid representation of women in the academic community.
    • The University of Tours (UT) offers 184 programs, including 53 Bachelor’s, 64 Master’s, 49 PhD programs, 6 Engineering Degrees, 12 Post-Master Diplomas and 1 Postgraduate Diploma. UT’s large student population of 25,079 (60% female) reflects its strong focus on academic diversity.
    • University of Nicosia (UNIC) offers a wide variety of programs, including 45 Bachelor’s, 63 Master’s, and 20 PhD programs, along with specialized offerings such as BSc in Medicine, Graduate Entry Medical Degree and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DMV). UNIC has 11,941 students, with 67% female students, underscoring its diverse academic offerings.
    • Bielefeld University (UNIBI) has a total of  203 programs, including 78 Bachelor’s, 81 Master’s, and 41 PhD programs, as well as 2 State examinations. The total student population of 23,124 reflects its significant academic presence.
    • University of Ostrava (OU) runs 208 programs, with 81 Bachelor’s, 84 Master’s, and 43 PhD programs. OU has 9,418 students, with 70% female students, demonstrating a diverse student body and a strong emphasis on postgraduate education.
    • Šiauliai State University of Applied Sciences (ŠVK) offers 22 Bachelor’s programs, with 960 female and 681 male students, contributing to the Alliance’s focus on undergraduate education.

    Each institution contributes uniquely to the alliance, ensuring a rich academic environment that caters to various research fields and professional disciplines.

    Student Demographics: Gender Distribution

    A key component of the NEOLAiA dataset is the analysis of student demographics, particularly gender distribution. Among the universities, the University of Salerno (UNISA) stands out as the largest, with a total enrollment of 34,154 students, 55% of whom are female, making it one of the institutions with the highest female representation. Following closely, the University of Tours (UT) has 25,079 students, with an even greater female majority, 60% women compared to 40% men. The University of Ostrava (OU) further amplifies this trend, with 9,418 students, 70% of whom are female, highlighting a diverse student body and a strong focus on postgraduate education, surpassing UT in female representation.

    The University of Jaén (UJA) also has a strong female presence, with 57% of its 14,863 students being women. In contrast, both Örebro University (ORU) and Ștefan cel Mare University of Suceava (USV) have a more balanced gender distribution, with women making up around 55-58% of the student population, suggesting a more equal representation of male and female students.
