Exploring Student Demographics at the University of Salerno

January 16, 2025

The University of Salerno has just released a comprehensive dataset that provides insights into student enrollment across its academic programs for the 2023-2024 academic year. The data includes key demographic information such as gender, age, and program specifics, giving us a better understanding of the university’s student population.

The University of Salerno offers students the opportunity to attend courses on three different campuses. The main campus, located in the town of Fisciano, hosts the majority of the university’s programs and serves as the heart of its academic and student life, while the Baronissi campus is exclusively dedicated to the Faculty of Medicine. In 2023, a new site was created in Avellino, where students can now enroll in three degree programs: the Bachelor’s Degree in Techniques for Building and Territory , the Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering for Digital Energy and the Master’s Degree in Cybersecurity and Cloud Technologies.

When we look at the gender distribution, we see that some departments have a fairly even mix of male and female students. For example, the Department of Cultural Heritage Sciences has one of the most balanced gender distributions, with 421 female students and 369 male students. Similarly, the Department of Economics shows relatively close numbers, with 703 female and 623 male students. On the other hand, some departments have significant gender differences. For example, the Department of Law has a strong female majority, with 1247 female students compared to only 566 male students. However, the Department of Industrial Engineering is male dominated, with 1143 male students and only 291 female students. In some fields, this gender gap is a global issue that is being addressed through targeted and effective actions within degree programs. At the University of Salerno, we actively work to reduce this gap through initiatives such as awareness campaigns and events like #8MarzoUNISA, dedicated scholarships, and the adoption of the University’s Gender Equality Plan.

In terms of age, the majority of students at the university are under 20 years old. The Department of Computer Science has 1149 students in this age group, while the Department of Civil Engineering has 408. There are also a lot of students between 21 and 40, with departments like Pharmacy (1027 students) and Department of Physics (137 students) having a lot of adult students. There aren’t many students over the age of 40, but they are present in every department, suggesting some continuing education and lifelong learning initiatives.
