The University of Jaén (UJA) has released a comprehensive dataset that provides detailed information about the demography of students enrolled in the active degree programs for the 2023-2024 academic year. The dataset includes the gender and age distribution of the university’s student population. For this academic year, UJA offered 56 Bachelor’s, 50 Master’s and 21 PhD programs. It should be noted that there were some double programs, which are longer plans that allow one to obtain two Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees at the end.
In the academic year 2023-2024, the University of Jaén had 14863 students enrolled in Bachelor’s (11697), Master’s (2272), and PhD (894) studies.
57% of students were women, and 43% were men. Most of the students (around 60,6 %) were in the age range 21-39 years old, while 34,3 % were below 20 years old, and 5,1 % were 40 years or older.
The majority of the students (92,4 %) took their lessons on the main Campus in the city of Jaén (Campus Las Lagunillas), while 703 undergraduates coursed engineering studies on the Campus of Linares (Jaén) and 428 undergraduates enrolled in Bachelor’s degrees in Preschool and Primary Education from the affiliated university Centre “Sagrada Familia” located in Úbeda (Jaén).
Regarding gender distribution, the Faculty of Social and Legal Sciences has the most balanced gender distribution, with 1383 female undergraduates and 1185 male undergraduates. Degrees in Law, Business Administration, or Finance have 40 – 60 % of female students. Around 50 – 60 % of undergraduates in Medicine, Physiotherapy, Chemistry, or Biology at UJA are women. Nevertheless, some Bachelor’s degrees have a bias toward the female gender, such as Nursing (80 % women), Social Work (85 % women), or Preschool education (90 % women). On the other hand, engineering studies have mainly male undergraduate students, around 80 % of the students in the Polytechnic School of Jaén and around 74 % of the students in Linares. Only the degree in Chemical Engineering taught in Linares has a majority of female students (38 women and 18 men). Similar trends are observed in Master’s degrees, although in total, there is around 60 % of female Master’s students at UJA. PhD studies showed, in general, a more balanced gender distribution, with 47 % of women.
